Ivan Grohar

Ivan Grohar (15 June 1867 in Spodnja Sorica19 April 1911 in Ljubljana) was a Slovenian Impressionist painter.

Grohar showed an interest in art from an early age and, encouraged by a local vicar, began working at a painter's studio in Kranj and later in Zagreb. By the end of the century he had become a renowned painter of religious images and acquired several prestigious commissions. He started to embrace Impressionism when he moved to Munich, where in 1899 Rihard Jakopič introduced him to Anton Ažbe. There he also became acquainted with Matija Jama and Matej Sternen. Despite his difficult social conditions Grohar participated in many exhibitions in Vienna, Belgrade, Berlin, London, Sophia, Trieste, Warsaw and Krakow. In 1909 he took part in the exhibition, which celebrated 80 years of visual arts in Slovene Lands in the Jakopič Pavilion in Ljubljana.
