Il Sorpasso (economics)
Il sorpasso (Italian for "surpass") is the nickname given to the 1987 event wherein Italy's economy grew larger than that of Britain in absolute GDP terms. This made Italy the fifth largest economy in the world, after the United States, Japan, Germany, and France.
Cynics contest that the shift was due in large part to the Italian government adjusting its statistical methods and accruing large public debt.
